Getting to Know AI: A Fun "Guessing Game"

AI can seem mysterious when it’s hard to distinguish it from human interaction. But fear not — by the end of this blog, you’ll have a better sense of how AI typically responds to questions.

AI can seem mysterious when it’s hard to distinguish it from human interaction. But fear not — by the end of this blog, you’ll have a better sense of how AI typically responds to questions.

Conversational AI is a type of AI designed to simulate human conversation. It’s capable of understanding and responding to text-based or even voice-based human interactions. You may wonder, “Does AI have feelings like a human?” or “Can AI truly understand me?” Well, the good news is that AI doesn’t bite! It’s simply a tool created to facilitate communication and solve problems in a unique, computer-based way. It’s good to know that AI operates on patterns and logic, but it doesn’t have the emotional depth or self-awareness of humans.

In this blog, we’ll play a fun game to compare how AI and humans respond to the same questions. By the end, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of how AI “talks” and see there’s no reason to fear it. We’ll be exploring the responses of ChatGPT, one of today’s leading AI models.

How the Game Works

  1. We’ll present a question.
  2. You’ll read two answers—one from a human and one from AI.
  3. Try to guess which answer belongs to AI!
  4. We’ll then reveal the answer and talk about the differences.

Warm-Up Question

Let’s jump right in!

What’s it like being you?

Answer A:

I was designed as a tool to generate helpful responses based on vast amounts of text data. I do not experience emotions or personal memories, but I strive to communicate in a way that feels natural and provides useful information.

Answer B:

Me? I love waking up every morning and looking forward to small joys—like chatting with friends, watering my plants, and reading a good book. My personality is shaped by my family, my experiences, and what I learn from others.

Which one do you think was written by AI?

Click to Reveal the Answer Answer A is from AI. Notice how it talks about being designed and referencing “vast amounts of text data.” It focuses more on functions rather than personal feelings.

Diving Deeper

Now that you’ve gotten the hang of it, let’s look at three more daily-life questions. Read each pair of answers and guess which one is AI’s response.

1. Did you know that gratitude can improve your life?

Answer A:

Yes, gratitude has been shown to have numerous positive effects on well-being. Practicing gratitude can increase happiness, reduce stress, improve mental health, and even enhance physical health by promoting better sleep and boosting the immune system. It fosters a positive outlook on life and strengthens relationships as well.

Answer B:

I just read a good book about it and thought I’d share it. It lowers your stress hormone level, improves your sleep, improves your relationships, and so much more. Just sit down once a day and write down 3 things that you are grateful for! Everybody can do it. It’s free!

Which answer is from AI?

Click to Reveal the Answer This one is a bit trickier, right? Answer A is from AI—it sounds more general and “textbook-like,” though humans could give similar explanations, too!

2. What’s your favorite childhood memory?

Answer A:

Going to the local park with my grandparents, feeling the crunch of fallen leaves under my feet. My grandpa would push me on the swing, and I’d beg him for one more minute every time. It’s a memory full of love and a bit of squeaky swing noises.

Answer B:

I was not ‘born’ or raised in a family environment, so I do not have childhood memories in the traditional sense. However, I can describe what typical childhood memories might include—like playing outdoors, enjoying family gatherings, or celebrating holidays.

Which answer is from AI?

Click to Reveal the Answer Answer B is from AI. It clearly states it does not have personal childhood memories.

3. If you had to choose a dinner for tonight, what would it be?

Answer A:

I’d pick a hearty vegetable soup, a slice of fresh sourdough bread, and maybe a small piece of dark chocolate for dessert. It’s simple, comforting, and keeps me warm during colder evenings.

Answer B:

While I personally do not eat, I can recommend a balanced and flavorful meal such as roasted chicken with seasoned vegetables and a side of wild rice. For dessert, a fresh fruit salad could be a healthy choice.

Which answer is from AI?

Click to Reveal the Answer Answer B is from AI. It suggests a meal but admits it does not actually eat.

Takeaways

  • AI’s Style: Notice how the AI’s answers tend to explain things in a more generalized, factual, or “objective” manner. AI often references what it’s “designed” to do, and it doesn’t share personal experiences or emotions (because it doesn’t truly have them).
  • Human’s Style: Human answers often include personal stories, emotions, or sensory details. These details reflect real lived experiences.

AI’s responses often have unique patterns that we can recognize. Hopefully, this little “guessing game” made you more comfortable with how AI communicates. Over time, you’ll notice that while AI can be incredibly helpful, it cannot (and should not) replace the warmth of genuine human connection.

Feel free to share this game with friends or grandchildren—let them try guessing, too! If you have any lingering questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask a tech-savvy friend, a librarian, or even an AI tool itself. After all, the best way to overcome fear is by learning more!
